Week 3 - Ethics in Technology

Part 1 - Study Techniques Reflection:

A study technique I have had problems with and noted in my previous blog post is time management. It has always been hard for me to manage my time because I believe I will never run out of it. I'll always have time later to do something. The time management and study skills article provided me with some pretty useful information. I calculated how many hours of the day I would be occupied, like sleep or eating and subtracted that from the hours I had available. From there I was able to calculate how many hours I want to spend doing school work. Now on I will try to dedicate that amount of hours each day to doing my school work. I know somedays I have more time, so I can dedicate more hours or have more free time. A schedule is important and that article helped me to make one that I can actually stick too.

Part 2 - This week's learning:

This week I  learned a lot about ethics and the different types of frameworks. I did not know there were that many different frameworks for ethics. I believed ethics tied into morality and how people chose to be as a person. There is no right or wrong ethical framework because ethics are not based in facts. They are more societal. Nonetheless it was still a fun topic to learn about and it explained why ethics was extremely important in computer science. In theory a person can do whatever they want but it can cause a lot of harm to other people doing this, that's why it is important in the world of technology. I also learned a lot about AI. My chosen topic for the upcoming paper revolves around AI and its use of user data. I was unaware of how much user data AI actually uses and what it is used for.  That was a real eye opener. With my team we researched the classes of this course and while I had a general sense of what I would be learning in the classes, I learned a lot more about what each class was.

Part 3 - Reading Reflection:

The industry of computer science is very complex. It is not like a lot of fields where a good resume can get you in the door. A solid portfolio is required to get far in the world of computer science. Some skills that are good to have are knowledge of different programing languages, operating systems, discrete mathematics, networking, and systems administration. That is by no means a complete list. There are so many little skills that are beneficial to have. There are so many avenues to explore that it is impossible to simplify the skills required of this profession. Nevertheless there are a lot of things that I can learn to set myself apart from the competition and secure my future.

Part 4 - Why integrity is important:

Integrity is important because without it the whole program would be undermined. If answers are being shared every where and people are not doing there own work they aren't actually learning anything. While it may be easy to use somebody else's work now, it will do more harm in the future. You won't really know how to do the stuff that is essential for jobs. There is only so many times you can find answers on the internet. Sometimes critical thinking is necessary and by using other people's work your not gaining that necessary information. Those post the answers and give out their work also hurt other people. They're giving a way out when they themselves had to do all the hard work to get those answers. Integrity is important so that everybody learns and nobody is left behind.
