Week 2 - My first paper

Part 1: Review and Reflect Learning Strategy

Studying has never really been my favorite thing to do. I am a very bad procrastinator so I love saving things for the last minute. This always leaves me stressed, so I am very grateful for this document showing ways to better my studying habits. The things that I am good at when it comes to studying are taking notes, extracting important details, and outlining textbooks. I am really good at finding the important information because I feel like it saves time. If I am reading over unnecessary information I am wasting valuable time that I could be using to study faster, so I am not stressing. I kind of like to speed run studying just to see how fast I can do it. That is why I think I am good at taking notes. I pick out all the important information and skip things that are unnecessary or common knowledge. Outlining textbooks is my favorite thing because it makes my studying faster. I outline the important things and when I go back to take notes, I know what was important and what wasn't. Things that I could work on are time management, a study schedule, and knowing the ground rules. I have terrible time management skills. The more important the assignment the worse my time management gets. I will start a completely new project in the middle of important things because doing them in that moment makes me anxious. That is why I believe I need to make a schedule and stick to it. It can better help me manage my time. Knowing the ground rules is one of the most important study skills that I lack. I always read direction to fast and end up doing something wrong, so I have to go back and fix it.

Part 2: Preview Time Management Skills

Project 3: Project Management Basics

A project is a service, result, or product achieved through initiatives. They have deadlines and end goals which differentiate them from day to day work. They also have a scope which defines the work to be done and the end goal of the project. The third aspect of a project is the cost of the project. These three aspects have a codependent relationship meaning a change in one can change another. Projects are also complex and must relate to business strategies. Projects need to be needed by either the market, business, technological advancement, customer request, legal requirements, social needs, or ecological requirements. Projects must be proposed but the priority of the project must also be taken into account. Preliminary analysis need to be done to ensure a project is not wasting company time and resources. In a project there is the project manager who asses the project, discusses the project with necessary peers and employees, and they must negotiate and adjust the constraints of the project. To be accountable is to commit and deliver a result. In terms of project management this relates to ensuring the project is completed. Project managers have a lot on their plate as they are the face of the project and communicate with all those involved with the project. Though they may not be an expert in the project subject they have the necessary skills to manage projects. Project management has come a long way starting long before the construction of the Egyptian pyramids but the concepts have still remained the same. By the 20th century using time and resources efficiently became essential. The critical path method soon found its way into project management in the 1950s. The project management profession blossomed after this. Project managers became essential because of their ability to handle complex projects. Project teams are the next step in project management. People are carefully placed together to ensure a successful project.

Part 4: Check out previous Capstones

US Naval Research Laboratory - I think this was a very interesting and unique project. Security Scanning software is something that will definitely be beneficial in the future considering the boom in cybersecurity. I do believe the project was well done and accomplished what they needed it too. While I did like the presentation I feel they could have added some more visual and color to their power point. Like they said in the video incorporating more types of files could improve this project but that was outside of their time restraints. Hopefully in the future they can build on their original project.

Infinity Areas - A capstone project revolving around mods is not something I could have predicted. I am glad they decided to do a project based on something they like. I think they have a well thought out and crafted project and they explain it very well. I think the visual displayed of the actual program are great but the presentation slides could have a little more detail. I do not think their project needs any more improvements. I think it is meant for others to learn to use it on their own and I admire that.

Vault JS - I personally love JavaScript. It works behind the scenes to make websites work. It does seem very tiresome to read through thousands of lines of code to find malicious lines, so I think this is a really beneficial project. Their presentation is well thought out and it has a lot of useful visuals. They explain what they did in their project very well and I love the flow chart. They even included a real world example. I think overall this was a really good project and there are not many things I would improve on.

Part 5: Summarize Week

This week has been a pretty chill week. I learned a lot about Microsoft over this past week during research for my paper. I knew they started off small but to see how far they have come is just crazy. From the lectures I also learned ways to improve my studying skills and my peer reviewing skills. There is a lot more that goes into studying than just reading and a good peer review. The essays that I read from my peers were very fascinating and the diverse topics we chose contributes to that. With the writing part of the module I learned that I had been using the wrong format for my essay. I have since gone in and fixed that but I will not be turning it in until next for the final drafts. I actually loved this weeks assignments as they gave me insights as to what is in my future. From the career I wish to pursue to the projects I can look forward to in this program. Overall this has been a nice week and I look forward to the next module.

Comments

  1. Hi Janaye!
I also have a bad habit of procrastinating. I started to create blocks in my schedule every day for dedicated study/homework time, about 2 hours on most days. This way, I know when exactly I should start doing work and when to stop if needed. Often times, especially on Mondays and Tuesdays, I will work longer than those 2 hours to get things done. It has been helpful for me so far, I'm hoping this tip helps you too!
